Theatres Liverpool – Empire Theatre

Major touring entertainment venue

Liverpool Empire Theatre is located on the corner of Lime Street and London Road in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. The theatre is the second to be built on the site, and was opened in 1925. It has the largest two-tier auditorium in Britain and can seat 2,348 people. During its time it has hosted many types of entertainment, including variety shows, musicals, operas, pop concerts, and plays. The Beatles appeared in the theatre in their early days. The theatre has hosted twoRoyal Command Performances and, in 2007, a Royal Variety Performance to mark Liverpool’s being designated a European City of Culture the following year. It is sited in the William Brown Street Conservation Area.

The Empire Theatre continues to stage productions in various genres, including musicals, pop concerts, comedians, plays, opera, and wrestling. The theatre is reputed to be haunted by at least two ghosts, one a former painter at the theatre called Len, the other a girl aged about nine or ten in Victorian dress. As of 2011 the Empire is part of the Ambassador Theatre Group(ATG).

Theatres Liverpool – Royal Court Theatre

At The Heart Of Great Liverpool Theatre

The Royal Court Theatre has always been a landmark building in Liverpool and has seen truly legendary names perform over the last one hundred years. Royal Court Liverpool offers a range of long running plays and one off shows. Past one-night performances have seen the likes of Joan Rivers, Russell Howard, Dylan Moran, Simon Amstell and Ben Elton bringing their shows to us.

We are dedicated to producing the very best in comedy, drama and musicals and we are looking forward to being at the heart of great Liverpool Theatre for some time yet…

Royal Court Interior

If you haven’t been to see a show with us before then you may be a little surprised by the layout of parts of the building. While the Circle and Balcony areas are set out as they would be in a traditional theatre, the Stalls area has been refitted in a cabaret style. We serve meals before a lot of the plays that we have on here and tickets with meals are only available in the Stalls. You need to pay for your meal when you book your tickets and then arrive no later than one hour before the performance to eat.

Theatres Liverpool – Playhouse Williamson Square

For a great night out!

At the Playhouse, we offer bold productions of great plays in the three-tier main house, and intimate, intense staging of new plays in the 70-seat Studio.

The Liverpool Playhouse is a theatre in Williamson Square, Liverpool. The building began life as the Star Music Hall in 1866, and became a theatre in 1911 on the formation of the Liverpool Repertory Company – one of the first and soon one of the most prestigious ‘reps’ in the country.

In its first half-century the Playhouse’s acting roster included Robert Donat, Michael Redgrave, Rachel Kempson, John Thaw,Anthony Hopkins, Patricia Routledge, Michael Gambon, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and many, many more. The latter part of the 20th century featured many high points, one of the most celebrated being the tenure of the Gang of Four – Alan Bleasdale, Chris Bond,Bill Morrison and Willy Russell.

Since it joined forces with the Everyman in 1999, the Playhouse has produced a rich and acclaimed programme including classic drama (such as Kim Cattrall’s Liverpool homecoming in Antony and Cleopatra), new plays (including commissions by Jonathan Harvey and Frank Cottrell-Boyce) and adaptations (such as Roger McGough’s delicious and delirious new versions of Molière).

In 2011, we celebrated the Playhouse’s Centenary with a full season of home-produced work, a Gala performance of The Ladykillers; the publication of a new book (see right), and our most special birthday present to the theatre was the reopening of the Studio as a performance space, with the world première of The Swallowing Dark by Lizzie Nunnery.

Our mission is to reflect the aspirations and concerns of our audiences, to dazzle and inspire them, welcome and connect with them, nurture the artists within them and fuel their civic pride. Wherever these connections happen – whether in our theatres, in the community, in schools, or outside Liverpool – we hope to ignite the imagination, explore what it is to be human and always to exceed expectation.
